  16. The OSI Directory uses distinguished names as the primary keys to
  17. entries in the directory.  Distinguished Names are encoded in ASN.1.
  18. When a distinguished name is communicated between to users not using a
  19. directory protocol (e.g., in a mail message), there is a need to have
  20. a user-oriented string representation of distinguished name.  This
  21. specification defines a string format for representing names, which is
  22. designed to give a clean representation of commonly used names, whilst
  23. being able to represent any distinguished name.

  25. This is now a Proposed Standard Protocol.
  26.  
  27. This RFC specifies an IAB standards track protocol for the Internet
  28. community, and requests discussion and suggestions for improvements.
  29. Please refer to the current edition of the "IAB Official Protocol
  30. Standards" for the standardization state and status of this protocol.
